Words of advice

1. Come alone or with a friend
Unless otherwise indicated on the class schedule, both singles and couples are welcome. And if you do arrive with a partner, be sure to participate in the partner rotation. Trust me, you will be a better dancer when you return to your guy or gal.

2. Attend the class that is appropriate to your level
Classes listed as Beginning level are open to everyone. For classes listed as Intermediate or Advanced...well different instructors have different criteria. When in doubt, ask. Sometimes a studio will have this info on their website.

3. Be early
Arrive 10-15 minutes before the class is scheduled to begin.

4. Wear the right shoes
Wear comfortable shoes, that will stay on your feet. Shoes that have a smooth sole, such as leather are best. Leave the rubbery soled shoes at home. And ladies, if you value your toenails, I strongly suggest closed toe shoes.

5. Wear the right attire
You don't have to wear something fancy, but do wear something comfortable. I recommend something that "breathes" like cotton. Avoid clothes or accessories that could easily catch, or get caught on your partner. If you plan on taking several classes bringing a change of shirt is advisable.

6. Invest in breath mints
Bring a tin of Altoids and share liberally. You can thank me later.

Are there any songs by The Frames that would work particularly well for any of the ballroom dances?

Hi there, I'm new to the community, and while i know that it isnt the most prolific of communities on LJ, i think it fits me pretty well, so here i am.

I've taken West Coast Swing for a few years now, more seriously for the last year (finally, a girlfriend with both rhythm, a desire to dance, prior dance experience, and the appreciation of a partner with the same! *gasp*). We've been doing a fair bit of Irish Set Dancing as well, a dying art that is much more fun than you would imagine, corny as it often looks. Anyway, a few months ago i took a Viennese Waltz workshop with Richard Powers, and it was phenomenal. Ever since i've been trying to find music in 3/4 time... ANY 3/4 time, whether it be fast or slow.

Apparently, in all the world wide web, there is very little in the way of listings of music in 3/4 time. Wikipedia had one at one time and they took it down for being non-useful, or something like that... the pricks. So, finally i thought of checking LJ, since i've had an LJ account for ever, and here i am.

However, as far as i can tell, even you guys dont have an extensive listing of 3/4 songs, though i saw a few that i added to my own list. So, as my little addition to the community, here's all the ones i've come up with (at least, these are the ones that dont make me want to scream and tear my ears off, of which several exist). Its in random order, with the slow and fast all mixed up, so choose the ones that suit you best. I've linked to youtube videos of them, so eventually these links will die as copyright infringements catch up to them, but for now they are current.

Enjoy, and feel free to suggest more, as this has been an ongoing quest of mine for a few months now. :)

Ice Cream - Sarah McLachlan
For the Nights I Can't Remember - Hedley
Take This Waltz - Leonard Cohen
Angel - Sarah McLaughlan

Country dance in LA? [Aug. 6th, 2008|02:20 pm]
Ballroom Deviants
I will be in Los Angeles from August 12-15 and I'm looking for a place to go Country (two-step, night club) and West Coast Swing Dancing. I will be staying in the Hollywood area.

I'm competing the Saturday I'm back and I want to make sure I keep practicing while I'm away. Talk about bad timing!

Do you have any recommendations of places to Country or West Coast Swing dance?

This is another generic Hi! I'm New post ;)
I live in the wonderous center of Canada where all there is to do is a) go to the movies b) go bowling or c) go to a club. I started ballroom before I was old enough to club, which of course, is option d.
I dance most types, but focus mainly on salsa, tango, and west coast swing.

:) Salsa musics easy, and so is west coast, but I've found that finding fun tango music is tougher. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Ballroom in IL [Nov. 9th, 2007|09:48 pm]
Ballroom Deviants
I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations as to ballroom studios in the suburbs of Chicago area? I'd prefer non franchised studios (no Fred Astaire or Arther) and I'm looking for a studio where I can possibly compete with the instructor. Any suggestions or even ideas where I can look?

No really! And they're on the slow side, so that makes them safe for the more senior members of your local ballroom club. :-)

[music |Alan Parsons Project -- Day After Day (The Show Must Go On)]

"Day After Day (The Show Must Go On)" by the Alan Parsons Project.

There's two versions on the recently reissued I Robot:
Track 8 -- original vocal version
Track 14 -- instrumental

But it's probably not suitable for dancing. Just my luck.

I love "Suddenly I See" by K.T. Tunstall, but I'm wondering if it's just too fast for a Cha Cha. Thoughts?
