A lot of popular music is suitable for Cha Cha, but here are some selections from my private collection of ballroom CDs:

Also: Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean," Tom Jones' "Sex Bomb," and Pink's "Get The Party Started." I don't own 'em, but they're perfect for Cha Cha!

[music |"Manana" - Peggy Lee]

Hi everyone,

I swing and ballroom dance in the San Francisco Bay Area. I just got back into it a couple months ago, after a too-long hiatus, and I forget why I ever stopped!

I'm trying to compile a great playlist of swing and ballroom songs, and I'm looking for recommendations! What are some of your favorite swing/ballroom songs, artists, albums? (For ballroom, please let me know which dance it's for. I'm still learning!)

Many thanks!

Dear Ballroom Dancing fan,

This is it! Four champions face off for the title of "America's
Best." Each couple will perform a short program and a long program
highlighting both mastery of their style and the creativity to go
beyond it. Plus, the best cabaret couples showcase gravity-defying
artistry.

Thank you for your support, and keep dancing!

Gocha Chertkoev on LMN... [Feb. 26th, 2007|04:33 pm]
Ballroom Deviants

beyondthebuzz
Hi. New here. Just wanted to let you guys know that Gocha Chertkoev (he was an instructor on Ballroom Bootcamp on TLC and he's won TONS of awards around the world) is in the movie and it's all based on ballroom dancing. It's called Inspector Mom: Kidnapped in 10 Easy Steps, and it's supposed to air March 8th at 8 eastern. Gocha and his wife both do some fabulous dancing in the movie. Danica McKellar from "The Wonder Years" is in it and she learned some dancing from Gocha - she's been saying she wants to be on "Dancing with the Stars" next cause she loved it so much.

Anyway - that's it. Just wanted to let you guys know that. :)

[music |The Shins -- Sealegs]

Whenever I'm listening to pop music I always find myself thinking about what kind of ballroom dance I could do to it. I usually pester email my immediate circle of friends about my ballroom dance obsessions, but I'd like to open it up to everyone. If you've got an album that might also work in the ballroom, please post the band and the album in the subject line and include the kinds of ballroom dances you hear in the tags. Soon we'll have our little database of ballroom deviancy!

The Shins
Wincing the Night Away

Track 2: "Australia"
Proposed ballroom dance: East Coast Swing, Lindy
A great pop tune with lots of backbeat. Love the Johnny Marr-esque guitar work and the Morressey-like vocals. James Mercer (the singer) is my age, so it is more than likely that The Smiths were part of his college music collection.

Track 4: "Phantom Limb"
Proposed ballroom dance: Argentine Tango, Tango
This is the hit track and I adore it. The strong walking beat on this song says Tango to me. YMMV.

Track 5: "Sealegs"
Proposed ballroom dance: Argentine Tango
A moody song with an unusual beat. But I swear that I can Argentine Tango to this.

I ordered shoes! [Jan. 31st, 2007|09:39 pm]

I ordered some of the "Very Nice" ballroom shoes. From what I hear they tend to be padded and that compresses after a while making the shoes loose -- but the lady I talked to who has them said she's always been happy with her's.

I've been dancing for over a year and I only own practice shoes. *laugh* I should be disgusted with myself.

Anyway, I'm excited about these!!

Hello everyone... I figured since I joined the community I'd introduce myself, especially as I've been following  orangepaisley and bastetbeads through their ljs, so you all know I'm not a stalker! ;-)

I'm in Montana, attending graduate school and going crazy except for sundays, when I drive two hours to another town to take lessons and help teach a couple of beginning dance classes, and then drive back. I started Ballroom dancing last year in October and was introduced to Argentine Tango this summer.

I share life with my fiance (who dances as well, lucky me!) and three cats -- and other hobbies include reading, playing with cats, some types of crafting, and occasionally some writing.

Anyway, I have fun reading about your dancing adventures... I tend to complain about school more than talk about dancing in my lj, since school takes up the majority of my time.

So anyway, hello!

Just some of the cool songs that were played by DJ zarlan at last Saturday's ABD dance:

Cha Cha/Hustle: Earth, Wind & Fire -- "September"
Neo-Tango/Argentine Tango/Rumba: Ensemble Sideral -- "Agua De Cielo"
West Coast Swing: Belle & Sebastian -- "The Blues Are Still Blue"
Tango: Kirsty MacColl -- "England 2 Columbia 0"

A few folks brought their own CDs for zarlan to play, which he was happy to do.

The moment that really made my week was hearing the Neo-Tango song and seeing the majority of the dancers in attendance doing Argentine Tango. And those who weren't doing Argentine Tango were doing the Rumba. Proof that 1) Different dances can peacefully co-exist, and 2) Neo-Tango (and other non-traditional music for a ballroom) will not drive everyone off the floor and out the door. Yay!
